ARTIST BIO

Saumitra Chandratreya is a Fiber-Installation artist who lives in Chicago, IL and Largo, FL. He was born in Mumbai and he considers Bangalore, India as his other home. He graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017 with a Master of Design in Fashion, Body and Garment. He has a BFA in Textile Design from the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology in

Bangalore, India.

 

Chandratreya was awarded one of the Emerging Artist Grants from Creative Pinellas in 2018. He was one of the emerging artists at the 2019 Gasparilla Festival of Arts in Tampa, FL. He was one of the Finalists who exhibited at the Union League Club of Chicago for Luminarts Cultural Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship Show. Chandratreya was awarded the Shapiro Graduate research fellowship at

the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was nominated by his department for the James Nelson Raymond Fellowship while studying at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

 

Chandratreya teaches at the Morean Arts Center in St.

Petersburg, FL. and is the visiting artist at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.

SAUMITRA'S INSPIRATION

It is my ongoing fascination with creating an image from a non tactile, non visual subject. I like a challenge of imagining a visual stimuli. I read Kevin’s poems from his book and loved the emotive nature of his poetry. The idea of this installation was nurtured because i had seen an artists call for a collaborative pieces and i really wanted to work with Kevin’s poems. The nature of his poetry really attracted me. The poems we chose speak about various layers and emotions in relationships and how the relationships change overtime. To imagine Kevin’s poems as a poetry-visual arts installation, we decided to use large textile panels to illustrate the poems because we want to create an experience that is consuming just like relationships are consuming.

  • Freelance Art Handler, Installer and Restorer St. Cate Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, FL

  • Designed curriculum and taught Print on Fabric class at the Morean Arts Center for their Spring, Fall and winter Session. Students were adults from age 35 - 70. 

  • The class is 6 weeks long, each class incudes a demonstration of a new Silk Screening technique and student initiated projects afterwards. 

  • The students gain practical understanding of how to handle various fabrics, what kind of ink to use to get a particular result, how to creat a complex image on the fabric and how to translate their thoughts as images on fabrics. The students create one off art prints or repeat patterns.

  • Work with Wilcom Embroidery Software and Adobe Illustrator at the Embroidery production facility of Hit Promotional Products. 

  • Digitize vector artwork with embroidery stitches and clean up the digitized files so that they sew fawlessly.
